Genevieve's Birthday!

What a blustery day it was yesterday! Nothing blows more than high winds! Yes, I made a bad pun. Sue me. :p So like the one thing I'm thankful for is that no fires were sparked or fueled by yesterday's winds. I stayed inside the whole day. Not so much fun, but I had Boomerang, laundry, room organization and the internet to distract me throughout the day. I'm still not done organizing. -__-

Aside from that thrilling Sunday. *yawn* I spent Saturday with [info]genevieve and part of it with my son. I first picked up my boy from his testing where he gets tutored and we left from there to Pasadena to pick up the jackalope. Traffic was total crap since there were several college football games scheduled that day.

After reaching the jackalope's house we got a quick lunch at the local Carl's Jr. Not exactly the best birthday luncheon to have taken her out to, but we were somewhat on a time schedule to get to Moorpark for a Civil War reenactment.

Yup, I took her out to a Civil War reenactment for her birthday. I had already planned to go myself and to take my son and figured I'd have [info]genevieve come along also to give her something to pass the day by. Plus, I thought it'd be fun. :)

So we spent a few hours watching Confederate and Union soldiers fight on from horseback with swords drawn and pistols firing. We looked on as the two forces riflemen advanced upon each while the drummers and flutists played on as canons blasted and echoed across the valley.

The final fight was the Battle for Mechanicsville which was scheduled at twilight. So along with the rifle shots fired and the thundering of the canons each shot was enhanced with the fiery glow of gunpowder. All-in-all a fun experience to witness.

By all means it's not quite a renaissance faire or a pirate festival, but still follows along the same event set up. Those that participate are in period dress and in character and there's a Union as well as Confederate camp and a third more general camp for the various other exhibitors and merchants who are selling period themed items and costumes.

After the event I dropped my son off with his grandparents so that I could take [info]genevieve out for a drink at Lucky Baldwins. The place was relatively packed early on a Saturday night with everyone watching the UCLA, USC and other college football games. Thankfully the last of them was being wrapped up and the place wasn't totally college sports gonzo'ed out.

Lucky Baldwins has arguably the best draught beer selection in Pasadena as well as Ventura County where I live. It's not a very large pub, but cozy enough to enjoy a good drink. I only wish it wasn't so far to travel to for me to drink at. :p

That was my weekend. Hope you had a nice birthday [info]genevieve!
